One Year & Loving the Work

Today I received a text message from Marjean.  She said, "Celebrate today.  It's been one year since you became my forever friend!"  What a great blessing it was to enter her home one year ago.  She truly has become an eternal friend.  I was so nervous about what she'd be like, what my living circumstances would be, and what lay ahead of me as a missionary.  Heavenly Father has been here every step of the way.   I'm so grateful for the wonderful priesthood leaders that helped me get ready, and the amazing friends and family that cheered me on, and continue to do so.  I marvel that I've been so cared for and loved!  I couldn't have dreamed my life could be filled with such joy!

We've been busy in all three wards and have met some great people in our new 9th ward visits.  My heart continues to ache for those who have lost the vision of the gospel in their lives, and given up on so many spiritual blessings awaiting them.  We encourage, love, and pray for them; and hope that the Savior's love will be felt through us.

The following picture is of Doris Shannon.  She is a sweet sister in the 9th ward that has lots of health problems.  She was placed on Hospice care a couple of weeks ago, and lives with her daughter Christine who is a nurse.  We visit her every week.  Sometimes she tires easily, but Christine says she always lights up when she knows we're coming.  Yesterday we were there.  It was 77 degrees outside and she decided she wanted to sit in the back yard.  She managed to walk out with her walker and we had a nice visit.  During that visit she said, "I'm going to die soon".  It was sad, but she seemed pleased that she would be with her husband.  I really believe the angels prepare us for that event, and she knows they are near.

The following pictures are of Newel K. and Christine Brown.  Christine is Doris Shannon's daughter.  Many of you will recognize Newel K. Brown's name.  He wrote the song, "I Hope They Call Me on a Mission."  Music has been his career all his life.  Along with writing, he's conducted many choirs, and orchestra's.  He regularly plays the piano at our Sunday meetings.  He and Christine are both very talented.  She paints murals for people, and they've both done beautiful art work in their home.  His daughter made the quilt for Christmas.

Sandra Reyes has become a very special friend.  She came out to church once in awhile but has started coming every week now.  I'm so proud of her for making the commitment to get involved again.  She lives with her brother who is a return missionary but has been inactive for several years.  Hopefully, he'll take her lead and begin to love the gospel again.

Well, I guess I needed to celebrate a birthday while here on my mission, I just can't believe I've turned 70 already!  The sister missionary's got together to help me celebrate. We had a great lunch at Spring Creek BBQ.

Back Row:  Sis. Shell left to return home from her mission on the 12th.  She had come for a year.  Sis. Harris is the new missionary that came a few days before this picture.  She's from Florida.  She'll be the new companion for Sis. Campbell.  Sis. Tingey is serving in Mesquite and her companion wasn't able to be there. Front Row:  Sis. Bennion is a missionary in the Church Employment office.  Me & Sis. Hulse.  It was fun to be with them on my "special" day!

How I love my family!  I think of you all the time, and about the joy you've brought into my life.  You are each wonderful in your own personal ways, and blessings have been doubled with my 15 grandchildren.  I miss you all so much!
